6 Sustainable & Comfy Organic Cotton Jeans

The Soho Jean

Denim is a staple of all of our wardrobes, but what you perhaps didn’t realise is that denim is one of the least environmentally sustainable materials. A recent article in Journal of Cleaner Production uncovered that one pair of conventional cotton denim jeans can have carbon emissions as large as 33.4kgCO2. A large portion of these emissions come from the immense water supplies needed to produce cotton using conventional farming techniques: 1kg of conventional cotton can require between 10,000 and 22,500 litres of water, depending on geographic region. Furthermore, one pair of conventional denim jeans can contain up to 10,850 litres of embodied water — that is, water used in the overall production of the end garment, inclusive of weaving the cotton fibre into a useable yarn.

Cotton farming thus produces a pretty bleak image. However, organic farming is on the rise. Between 2016 and 2017, the number of GOTS certified organic cotton farms grew by 8% to 5,024 farms globally. Moreover, organic cotton uses up to 91% less water per square meter, than its conventionally grown alternative. Recognising the huge environmental benefits, Australian loungewear brand Robb & Lulu chooses to craft its signature loungewear out of only 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. Amongst their staple pieces, Robb & Lulu has created the ultimate intersection between style and comfort with the Soho Jean. Made from 100% organic cotton stretch drill, these women’s lightweight organic denim jeans are dreamily soft, and perfect for wearing at home, and out and about. Not only are these jeans nice on you, they’re nice to the environment. Below, we’ll introduce you to our gorgeous new colours, each hand dyed using a cold pigment dye with a stonewash finish to make them the ultimate in comfort denim.

Feminine, but edgy. That’s our new Pearl Blush shade in the Soho Jean. Feature pockets and side panels accent the legs, while the structure of the jean allows for structured flow. Made with hand dyed organic cotton stretch drill, these organic denim jeans have a divine pastel finish. An elasticised waist with adjustable drawstring, and a cuffed leg make this jean the ultimate in versatility. We use a stonewash finish to give this lightweight organic denim a divinely soft finish that makes it feel more like your favourite organic loungewear, than a chic pair of jeans. We think the Pearl Blush is contrasted beautifully with the matte finish on our organic cotton Baltimore long sleeve tee in Stone.
